Every summer, like clockwork, the world starts yelling at us:
“Tone up!”
“Cover up!”
“Glow up!”
It’s no wonder that summer can be such a triggering season for body image. Whether it’s shopping for swimsuits, RSVPing to pool parties, or just walking out the door in shorts, so many of us feel like we’re being watched and graded.
But what if this season wasn’t a performance review for your body?
What if summer could be soft, sweaty, and sacred—and your body didn’t have to be a project, just a participant?
If you’re still feeling stuck in the pressure to fix your body before you live in it, go check out my post, “How to Get the Perfect Summer Body” (spoiler: it’s not a six-week shred program). It’ll help reframe the pressure before you start writing.
Then come back here. This blog is full of reflective body image journal prompts to help you navigate summer with intention. Whether you’re feeling the pressure of the so-called “summer body” or just trying to show up without shame, these prompts are here to help you come back home to yourself.
And if you’re looking for a longer practice, I also have a body image journal workbook in the works (stay tuned & be the first to know by joining my email list called “The Lunch Box Notes” 👀).
I’m a body image coach and eating disorder therapist who helps women in recovery stop second-guessing their appearance and start living fully in the body they have now—not the one they were taught to chase.
If you’ve made peace with food but still feel stuck in shame, comparison, or body anxiety (especially in social settings like weddings, vacations, or beach days), you’re in the right place. I’m here to help you unlearn the noise, get curious about your inner dialogue, and build body trust—on your terms.

Disclaimer: You don’t need to have the right answers. You don’t need to fix your mindset overnight. These aren’t fluffy affirmations or toxic-positivity-in-disguise. They’re invitations—designed to help you get honest, curious, and maybe even a little rebellious about the way summer has shaped your relationship with your body.
So many of us were taught that our bodies are statements.
Thinness = discipline.
Curves = confidence.
Softness = laziness.
But beliefs are not facts. And most of the ones we carry about our bodies didn’t start with us—they were handed down like bad sunburn advice.
This body image journal prompt is meant to unpack what you think your body communicates, and who taught you to see it that way.
This one is a summer body image game-changer.
This is where your freedom lives—in the details.
The tank top that’s gathering dust.
The beach invite you keep dodging. The shorts you “might wear after X.”
Your body doesn’t have to be edited to join in joy. Use body image journal space to imagine what unfiltered summer living could look like.
Even if it feels far away. Even if it scares you a little—this is your permission slip to explore it anyway..
This one’s tender, I know.
But naming the shame takes away its power.
What are the phrases or tones that rise up when you catch a glimpse of your reflection or see a photo of yourself? Whose voice are you actually hearing?
Is it a parent? A coach? Diet culture with a Target ad budget?
Your body image struggle didn’t start in a vacuum. It’s okay to trace the echo.
p.s. This is one of my favorite body image journal prompts to use with clients who are doing the deep work of unlearning and untangling shame.
Let’s flip the narrative. Instead of chasing a look, anchor into a feeling.
Do you want to feel free? Present? Unbothered? Playful?
These kinds of body image journal prompts help you visualize what freedom could actually look like—in your life, not the one marketed to you. Your body is not the obstacle to that feeling. It’s the container.
You don’t need to earn summer.
Not with your weight. Not with your wardrobe. And definitely not with your willpower.
Your body is already invited.
So light the citronella candle, get out your pen, and show up for yourself in these pages like you would for your best friend.
Because this isn’t just journaling. This is resistance. This is healing. It’s coming home to yourself—even when the world is yelling.
If you loved these prompts, make sure you’re subscribed to my newsletter where I send body image support that’s spicy, honest, and never “just love yourself” Or follow me on IG [@itscillahope] for more soft rebellion all summer long.
